Kaabbua Cloth: The Artistic Heritage of Ubon Ratchathani

Kaabbua cloth is a remarkable artwork that embodies the history and culture of Ubon Ratchathani Province. Invented by a skilled artist, it represents the beauty and pride of Thailand's rich cultural heritage. The cloth was designed in 2000 by Mr. Meechai Taesujariya, an outstanding artist from Ubon Ratchathani (weaving branch), who has been recognized as an art teacher of the land and registered as a national cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture in 2014. Kaabbua cloth is available in three distinct types, each showcasing a unique weaving technique and aesthetic beauty.

1. Kaabbua Cloth: Standard Type

This type of Kaabbua cloth is woven using four different techniques, including two types of weft woven alternately:

  • Mudmee
  • Mabmai: Two-color silk thread twisted like a squirrel's tail
  • Khit (or lift)

2. Kaabbua Juk Dao Cloth

The Kaabbua Juk Dao cloth features warp threads (styled after the Tiw sarong of Ubon) and weft threads woven in an alternating Juk star pattern. This cloth is reminiscent of the traditional Sintiw design.

3. Kaabbua Kham Cloth (Kaabbua Yok Thong Cloth)

The Kaabbua Kham cloth, also known as Kaabbua Yok Thong, is a golden cloth that combines various colors of silk. It may also be woven together with Mudmee, adding depth and a unique aesthetic to each piece.
