Praewa Cloth

Praewa fabric is a silk textile traditionally used by the Phu Thai people, draped like a sash. It is approximately 1 cubit wide and 1 wa long, which is the origin of its name "Praewa Cloth." The weaving process originates from Ban Phon in Kham Muang District, Kalasin Province, and is carried out by weavers from the Phu Thai cultural group. The production involves a traditional weaving process using the "little finger" technique to insert colored silk threads into special weft lines, creating intricate patterns. The fabric often uses natural dyes, particularly red derived from lac, giving the piece a unique, vibrant look. A single piece of Praewa cloth takes months to weave.

A piece of Praewa cloth features dozens of unique patterns, each symbolizing elements of the community's belief system. For example, the Naga pattern represents ancestors, while the Kaew flower symbolizes abundance and the goodness of life. Praewa cloth is worn by Phu Thai women during special occasions such as the Rocket Festival, Yao Ceremony, and weddings.

Praewa cloth has been registered as a national cultural heritage since 2014. It stands out as a unique silk fabric, distinct from royal textiles, often draped over the shoulders of the Phu Thai people. Its hallmark is the use of bright colors and symmetrical patterns, with a length of approximately 1 wa, giving rise to its name, "Praewa."

Traditionally, Praewa fabric features vibrant colors, mainly a red background that contrasts with black clothing, as it was originally used for important occasions. It gained wider recognition when Her Majesty Queen Sirikit wore a beautifully sewn Praewa robe, sparking widespread interest in this traditional textile and its adaptation into contemporary clothing.

Praewa Silk Fabric

The intricate patterns of Praewa cloth are woven one row at a time, a method similar to that used by other ethnic groups. However, because it uses silk threads, the yarn is smaller and requires greater precision. The weaver must pay close attention to follow the pattern of the prototype (Sae Saew fabric) without making mistakes, which makes Praewa cloth unique.

Even with the integration of new techniques that make inserting threads into the pattern easier and allow for wider fabric production, Praewa cloth remains an important piece of cultural artistry, standing out from other ethnic textiles due to its silk material.
