Praewa silk, a unique culture of Phu Thai women

When we talk about Thai fabrics that are beautiful and outstanding, the word "Praewa Silk" is the most prominent in our minds. Praewa cloth is not just a Thai woven cloth, but a symbol of culture and tradition that combines wisdom and art, showcasing the weaving skill of the Phu Thai people. It embodies the depth of Thai culture.

Praewa Silk is considered traditional cloth unique to Phu Thai women, adhering to the cultural norms of "black shirt, black silk, silk skirt".

Praewa Silk

Traditionally, "Praewa cloth" was a biang or sabai cloth with a dark red color and narrow width of only 1 cubit. The word "Prae" means silk, and "Wa" means the length of 1 wa. Therefore, Praewa means a narrow sash with a length of 1 wa.

Praewa cloth is the only type of woven fabric that uses a combination of weaving techniques, such as collecting and mixing khit and patterning (Koh Lai), resulting in patterns unique to Praewa cloth. It is classified into three types: Praewa Koh, Praewa Luang, and Praewajakdao.

  • Praewa Koh: Woven with colorful patterns at regular intervals using fingertip weaving technique.
  • Praewajakdao: Developed from Praewa Luang, using a single color weft with added small stripes in different colors, spaced out like stars.
  • Praewa Luang: Woven using the same pattern as Praewa Koh but with a single color weft, usually darker than the background.
Praewa Silk in Kalasin Province

More than 40 years ago in Kalasin Province, Praewa cloth was in decline, with very few people still weaving it. On November 29, 1977, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit visited Kham Muang District in Kalasin Province. They noticed the beauty of Praewa cloth worn by the villagers and supported the revival of the craft by providing silk threads and encouraging villagers to continue weaving. This led to the development of the cloth into various colors and sizes. Today, Praewa cloth is part of the arts and crafts promotion project, showcasing the craftsmanship of the Phu Thai people.

Praewa Cloth Types

Praewa cloth has memorable characteristics, including Praewa Koh, Praewa Luang, and Praewa Jok Dao. Each type is woven with heart and care from the beginning to the final step, making Praewa fabric an excellent choice for creating unique clothing.
