Ratchawat Cloth: A Testament to Thai Artistry

The passion for a simple way of life and pride in Thai art are deeply rooted in the tradition of hand-woven fabric, which has been a part of Thai identity for generations. Ratchawat cloth is a prime example, woven by skilled community artisans who put their effort into both weaving and designing intricate fabric patterns. This work reflects the artistic genius of Thai people, who create beautiful and valuable pieces of art.

What is Ratchawat Cloth?

Ratchawat cloth is a brocade fabric featuring raised, small square patterns made with multi-colored warp threads. Typically, 2 to 4 strands of different colors are used, arranged in an alternating sequence across the width of the fabric. Two sets of takos are used at a time, creating a distinct raised pattern that is visible on both sides. This method gives the fabric its unique texture and beauty.

History of Ratchawat Cloth

The name "Ratchawat" has royal origins. In 1932, when His Majesty King Prajadhipok visited Songkhla, the local community of Ko Yo, which had been weaving for generations, presented him with their best fabric pattern. This pattern, called "Yok Dok Khan Krat" or colloquially the "Dove Neck Pattern" because of its resemblance to dove neck feathers, was chosen for its beauty. Women traditionally wore the fabric outside the home, while men would drape it over their shoulders when visiting temples. King Prajadhipok bestowed the name "Ratchawat" upon this exquisite fabric.
