Mai Khit Fabric: The Art of Thai-Lao Weaving

Mai Khit Fabric reflects the proud weaving art of the Thai-Lao people, passed down through generations. Patterns are woven using a wooden pole to create unique and elegant designs, combining cotton and silk. These patterns not only display beauty but also represent the local culture of Thailand and Laos.

Khidmai fabric is a woven fabric characterized by the addition of weft yarns, resulting in continuous patterns across the entire width of the fabric. A thin piece of wood, called a crutch, is inserted between the warp threads to lift them, allowing the weft threads to create the intricate Khit pattern. This weaving technique is popular among the Thai-Lao ethnic groups along the Mekong River Basin, as well as some northern and central regions of Thailand. Traditional patterns include the Naga, Ta Pao Long Ko, Dok Kaew, Elephant, Turtle, and Hook designs.

Originally, Khit cloth was woven by poking the warp threads across the entire width of the cloth and inserting the weft yarn. The yarns intersect rhythmically, forming patterns visible on both sides of the narrow fabric. In Isan culture, Khit cloth is used to make pillowcases for special occasions like religious ceremonies. It is also used to make Khit pillows, shawls, and hair scarves, often as gifts for significant events. Khit cloth is traditionally kept in high places, symbolizing its value.

Development of Khit Silk Weaving

In 1982, during an initiative led by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit at Tham Klong Phen Temple in Nong Bua Lamphu Province, weaving of Khit cloth was encouraged and expanded. The project included taking single patterns from pillow fronts and extending them to cover entire fabrics, making the cloth wider and suitable for various uses. The technique for weaving Khit patterns was enhanced with a device called "khao" to diversify its applications, leading to the origin of "Khid silk."
